At different times of my life, it happened that I was in a situation when I did not know anymore what decision to take, or what was the will of God for my life. I was troubled, because I did not know how to discern the will of God, and it created panic into my life, because I had the impression to be lost, I had the impression that I was going far away from the Lord and that my life was losing itself. In those moments, I did not realize it, but today, with experience, I understand what it was: it was confusion.
Confusion, according to the Medline Plus Medical Encyclopedia, is the inability to think as clearly or quickly as you normally do. To give an example, let us suppose that you are driving a car, and suddenly your brake is no more functioning. At the same moment, you are with your child, and 50 meters ahead of your car, there is an old woman crossing the street. Without self control, and in an unexpected situation, you can lose your capacity of decision, and at this moment you will be in confusion. Now, let us imagine that this situation is the representation of your spiritual life. You are actually engaged in a direction with God, and suddenly an unexpected thing happens, and you were not prepared for that. At this moment, completely lost by the situation, you have a pressure to do urgent things for example in your workplace, or in your school, or in your family, and at the same time you have this unexpected situation which just happened. What can you do? Sometimes, before the pressure of what we can live as Christians in this kind of situation, we live a situation of confusion.
I want us to study this topic in this post because sometimes in our faith it happens that we go through situations of confusion, and we do not even realize it. And sometimes, even after going through those situations, it happens that we never really recover and have difficulties to understand what decisions to take in some not so difficult situations. That is why, through this post, I want to help every reader to end confusion in his life, because myself I went through it.
In the book of Esther, in Esther 3:15, the Bible says that “the couriers went out, spurred by the king’s command, and the edict was issued in the citadel of Susa. The king and Haman sat down to drink, but the city of Susa was bewildered.” To understand the context of this passage, Haman, one of the royal officials of king Xerxes during the time of Esther, wanted to kill all Jews, because Mardochai refused to bow down before him. Then, he schemed a plan by making king Xerxes to sign a decree ordering the killing of all Jews in the kingdom. Hearing this news, all Jews were in confusion, because, in the verse mentioned, other versions say “confusion” instead of “bewildered”. Jews did not know what to do, they were troubled, they were panicked, they were tormented, and they cried to God to help them. From this story, we can learn different lessons, that I would have wanted to share to my younger self a few years ago.
The first lesson we can learn here is that in their confusion, Jews cried to the Lord. From the situations I went through, I understand that panic and fear sometimes created confusion in my life. At this moment, I did not know anymore what decision to take, and I could not pray or do anything else. I was just looking for ways to solve by myself my own problems. Like Jews, instead to run everywhere to find solutions by ourselves or crying or spending long hours to know what to do without having any clear idea, the best thing to do is to pray to God. It seems to be the most obvious thing, but it is sometimes the thing we do the least, when we are affected by confusion and do not know what to do. Jews prayed, they cried to God, it was their first reaction, and it is also what we should do.
But how to pray when we are under panic, stress, and fear? It is necessary to rebuke the spirit of confusion. In Esther 4:4-8, the Bible tells us what Mordecai did when Esther sent his eunuch to ask him what was the reason of his cries. Later, he will send a message to Esther to tell her to plead for the rescue of Jews with king Xerxes. Confusion is not from God, it is from the devil. Then, when you feel that fear and panic come into your heart, when you feel that anything comes to stop you to think clearly, rebuke immediately confusion from your life. It is the first thing to do. And when you will do it, you will feel that your ideas will become clearer. I remember a time in my life when I was in confusion, I was so confused that I cried to the Lord to help me. As I lived in a building, I went to the top and I shouted to God to help me! I was desperate to find help, because I did not know what to do. It did not really help me, because this situation continued even after that. Did not God hear my cry? Yes, He heard my cry. Simply, I did not rebuke myself the spirit of confusion which was affecting my life. And many Christians are living like that, because they are now so confused that they do not even know anymore that they are confused. But when you realize that confusion wants to destroy you, rebuke it. Then, whatever be the situation of confusion you face, cry to God, and ask Him to help you. But also, take time to rebuke the spirit of confusion into your life. Mardochai, considering the situation of his people, understood that the Jewish people had to use Esther in her position of queen as a weapon to be rescued. In the book of Ephesians, in Ephesians 6: 11, the Bible says to put the full armor of God, so that we can resist in the bad day. Then, the Bible recommends us to use the spiritual weapons He gave us to defeat the works of the enemy. The Jewish people, through Mardochai, used queen Esther as weapon to destroy the works of Haman, who had schemed to kill all Jews. They started in prayer, they continued by using the weapon they had. It should be the same for all children of God, who should go in prayer and rebuke confusion into their lives when they feel it. We know the end of the story: Haman was impaled. We must rebuke confusion into our lives to get again direction, because when we are confused, we cannot have clear direction.
In Esther 9:1-18, the Bible tells us what the Jews did in response to the decree signed by king Xerxes under the scheme of Haman. Thanks to Esther, two decrees were signed to allow Jews to defend themselves. They killed all their enemies and protected their lives. Through this passage, we can understand an important lesson. The Jews not only killed Haman, which could represent confusion rebuked into our lives, but they also took back their freedom, because the first decree of the king telling that Jews had to be killed could not be revoked. Counter decrees only could save them, and it is what happened. They killed their enemies, and some people even became Jews because of the fear they had from the Jews. Particularly when your time of confusion was long, it is important to recover what you lost during this time. Sometimes, because of your confusion, you can lose friends, or a job, or anything else of importance, and the devil is joyful about that. But when you rebuked confusion into your life and found again direction, it is now time to recover what you lost, by praying for the recovery of everything you lost, like the Jews who recovered their freedom through the help of Esther. You have to get back what you lost during this period, and it is by praying for the recovery, the restoration of everything you lost, that God can intervene. Take time to rebuke any part of your life where there was confusion, and pray after that for the recovery of everything you lost in this area of your life. Then, you will see God working. Is it enough? No, because you have also to associate action, but it is not the subject of this post. The most important was already explained, how to end confusion.
Then, to summarize everything I said, you end confusion into your life by first praying to God and not relying on yourself, second by rebuking confusion into your life, and third by praying for the restoration of everything you lost during this time of confusion. I hope that it will help you, because it helped me.
