As Christian, it often happened that I feel sorry to see a lack of excellence in my own life. I often tried in the past to be excellent in what I did, but through time, I understood some things about excellence that I would like to share with you. Sometimes, it happens that we go into a church, with some unbelievers that we invited, for a concert. Then, without no explanation, the concert starts 45 minutes late, and when the mc comes, he apologizes for this delay. During the concert, the sound makes a lot of noise, and it is not easy sometimes to hear what the singers are saying. At the same time, some singers come, and they lack of coordination in their songs and do not seem to be interested to what they are doing. At the end of the concert, nobody seems touched by what was done during the concert, and for those who came, they can even ask why this church organized this concert. The reality is that sometimes, even in our churches, excellence is not a criteria, and the results are mediocre, in our service, in our preachings, in our organizations. But as Christians, we need to change our perception of excellence, because our God is a God of excellence. The Chosen, a Christian tv show which tells the life of Jesus Christ, has today more than 500 million views on the Chosen app. One of the reasons of the success of this show is very certainly the excellence put in the making of the series. The writing is excellent, and the performance of the actors is at an hollywoodian level. It completely shifted the level of quality of Christian movies, which were often not very good in terms of acting but also of writing, with some exceptions.

Through this article, I want us to understand the importance of excellence, because if we want to achieve the plan of God for our lives, we need to do it with excellence. Indeed, unless we are excellent in what God called us to do, there are levels we will never be able to reach. My hope through this article is to motivate you to become excellent in what you do, and particularly in the calling God gave you. For me, more than ever, being excellent is something I am more and more looking for.

According to Oxford Languages, excellence is the quality of being outstanding or extremely good. In this article, I am going to give us three reasons why we need to consider excellence in our lives as Christian, and particularly to achieve the plan of God for our lives.

The first reason is that our God is a God of excellence. In Isaiah 12:5, it is written “Sing to the Lord, For He has done excellent things; this is known in all the earth.” (New King James Version). In other versions, it is said that He has done glorious things. By reading this verse, we can understand that our God is a God of excellence, because everything He does is excellent. In Psalm 18:30, it is written that “As for God, His way is perfect: the Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in Him.” This second verse, once again, show us that God is a God of perfection, or excellence. Everything He does is excellent. Today, scientists continue to study the human body, because until today, none of them is able to explain the excellence of the creation of the human body. And the more they study the human body, the more they contemplate the excellence of the creation of God. Then, being children of God in Christ, we cannot have a nature different from the one of our Father: we have to honor Him by being excellent in everything He called us to do. Unfortunately, this nature is not always represented in the Church of Jesus Christ.

The second reason why we need to be excellent is that by being excellent, we attract elevation into our lives. In Daniel 6:3, it is written that “Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom“. The context of this passage is that king Darius, king of Babylon, wanted to establish three administrators on his kingdom, and among them was Daniel. However, because of the superior spirit which was in Daniel, the king also wanted to establish him on the whole kingdom. It is important to say that since the beginning of his captivity in Babylon, Daniel had always been at the court of the kings of Babylon, but it happened after that God gave to him and his fellows a superior spirit. Nonetheless, it is not just because of his superior spirit that Daniel stayed at the top. It is also because he was excellent in his work. I met many Christians with a high potential to sing, or to preach, or to do business, but because of negligence and mediocrity, they never go beyond a certain level. Anointing is not enough to stay at the top, it is your character in anointing that makes the difference. Then, with or without anointing, the simple fact to seek excellence in what you do as child of God will alwasy position you at a high level, and will prepare you for elevation. Then, if you are preacher, by seeking excellence in your preaching, it will not be a surprise that after a moment you see more and more impact in the lives of people through your preachings. It will not be also surprising that you be more and more sollicited by churches. If you are businessman/businesswoman, it will not be surprising that the excellence you put in your product begins to generate more and more sales and that you be contacted for partnerships. If you sing, it will not be surprising that people be more and more connected to God through your worship but also that you be more and more sollicited to sing in concerts and nations for the glory of God. Excellence will always lead you at the top. Start today, and you will see how God will progressively open doors for you.

The third and last reason why excellence is important is that it will make us worthy representatives of Christ on earth. As said in the first reason, our God is a God of excellence, which means that we should also imitate Him by being excellent. It implies that we reject laziness and mediocrity, and that we embrace excellence, for the glory of our Father. When a Christian is excellent in what he does, he honors God, and this glory touches the life of unbelievers. Indeed, imagine for example that in your company, you start to become excellent in what you do. At this moment, this change of quality will produce amazement with your colleagues. It is true that some of them could certainly be jealous, it always happens, but there will also be some people who will ask you how you do to be so excellent in what you do. It will be then a good time to expose them the gospel of Jesus Christ. By being excellent in what you do, you honor God, and it can be used by God to bring people to Christ. If in the Church every believer applied himself to be excellent, the whole world would be rapidly evangelized, faster than we think. I will also say that a change of mind happens when you understand the necessity of excellence as Christian. As long as you have not this undertanding, as long as you have not a revelation of that, if your work is not average, you will be mediocre. And unfortunately, when we are mediocre, unbelievers are faster than Christians to judge the quality of our work.
