The Bible says in Proverbs 11:24 that “one person gives freely, yet gains even more. Another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.” Through this verse, the Bible teaches us very clearly that there is a blessing in the fact of giving. However, in the context of this post, I want to emphasize on the importance of giving for the house of the Lord.
A lot of Christians, unaware of the importance of giving, neglect to give their tithes and offerings. They are negligent in their giving, or they heard of some teachings saying that tithing is not biblical. Personally, I did not find, after all those years in Christ, any fundamental reason why Christians should not tithe. In my opinion, it is a trap of the devil to believe that tithing is wrong. Indeed, when you give your tithe, or when you give your offering, you should not focus on the material aspect of giving, that is to give within a local church. You should rather focus on the spiritual aspect, that is that when you give your tithe or offering, it is to God that you are giving. Also, I am pretty sure that you already heard a lot of teachings about the meaning of tithing, then I will not come back on this point. Nevertheless, I want to challenge you.
In the old covenant, tithing was about giving the tenth of our goods to God. It was organized this way to remind Israel that God is the source of everything, and they had to obey it in order to be blessed in their finances and their projects. However, in the new covenant, the covenant in Jesus Christ, we are no longer under the law, which means that we are no longer limited to 10% of our finances, because it is mostly through our finances that we give our tithes today, but we can give more. Giving 10% to God is not wrong, but as Christ gave His life for us, we should also be able to give our lives for Christ, and it can be manifested through our finances. In this way, you should learn to give to God more than 10% to God in the new covenant. The more you give to God, the more you show your love for Christ. Now, am I telling you to empty your bank account to give to the Lord? No, because, as stewards of the Lord, we have also the responsibility to manage in a responsible way our finances. That is why even apostle Paul says in 2 Corinthians 8:12: “For if the willingess is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have“. Through this verse, apostle Paul is explaining that we should give to the Lord based on our capacities, and not beyond. He invites to a responsible giving. Nevertheless, the purpose of this post not being to explain how to give but why it is important to give, I will give two important reasons why giving to the house of the Lord is a blessing.
Coming back to Proverbs 11:24, the Bible teaches us that when we give to the Lord, we receive more. It is a spiritual truth, and I have the opportunity to experience it in my own life. Since I started to give to the Lord on a regular basis, particularly concerning my tithes, I can see that the Lord allows me to have more. I don’t experience financial lack in my life, which does not mean that there are not difficult situations sometimes, but God allows me now to gain more. I live it because I understood the importance of giving, and particularly the importance of giving faithfully. Then, when you give to the Lord in a faithful way, you are attracting on your life abundance. Now, does it means that you should give expecting God to give you abundance? No, because giving to the Lord should be first based on love, not on what the Lord can give me in return. But when apply His principles for financial blessing, including giving, God gives you much more in return, because He owes no one. I invite you to read this testimony, that gives a good idea of why tithing is so important for your own life, and that you can find on the website of the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness (MSIA): “Yes just like all of us, I was very skeptical about tithing, until about three months ago I decided to take God’s challenge. Ever since that time I have seen God move mightily in my finances. I received two salary increases, first was 5% and the second was 15%. And I now have perfect peace in my life. I will continue tithing until the Lord calls me home.”
Second, the Lord also allows you to get more in your prayers. Since I started to be a faithful giver, and since I began to believe more and more in the power of giving, I also see God responding more frequently to my prayers. I see how God is transforming my prayer life, I see how God is leading me in a deeper intimacy with Him through prayer. Then, giving impacts positively your life. There a lot of blessings in the fact of giving, and I cannot emphasize enough on it. Now, whatever be your opinion on the subject, I can understand we have disagreements. However, I humbly invite you to consider, beyond your opinion, what tithing brings in the life of those who testify about it. If it is so powerful, and if there are so many testimonies, why not trying yourself?
Now that I end this post, the focus was more on tithing, but it was just to emphasize on the necessity of giving. You can give to the Lord in multiple ways, tithing is just one of them. By giving to the Lord, according to His Word and in the liberality of the Holy Spirit, you will see blessing coming to your life. Giving is powerful, try it from today.
I pray that you become a powrful giver in the house of the Lord.
Grow in Christ, Achieve His plan for your life. Amen.
